Between 1907 and 1913, Preuss achieved numerous mountaineering feats and became one of the leading mountaineers of the era. In addition, he became notorious for his beliefs and approaches that went against the prevailing spirit of mountaineering at the time. Indeed, he was a controversial figure among his contemporaries.
